Freshman
Priscilla Curiel's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Cal State San Bernardino a 4-3 win in the opener and the Coyotes exploded for eight runs in the third inning of the nightcap to sweep at CCAA softball doubleheader from UC San Diego Friday.
The second game ended in the fifth inning with the mercy rule covering the Coyotes 10-1 advantage.
The Coyotes are now 13-11-1 on the season, 6-2 in the CCAA while the Tritons are 14-5 overall and 4-4 in the CCAA. The two teams complete their four-game series at noon Saturday at Coyote Softball Park with another twinbill.
In game one, Jenny Maze drove in two of the Tritons' three runs off Coyotes starter
Debbie Shisler as UCSD took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Prior to that the only runs off Tritons' starter Melissa Ward were solo back-to-back homers in the first by
Ashley Collinwood and
Nicole Camarena. It was Camarena's seventh HR of the season.
After Curiel walked in the home half of the sixth, Curiel delivered her third home run of the season with a runner on to give the victory to Coyotes reliever
Jackie Jacob (5-4), who came on in the top of the sixth to spell starter
Debbie Shisler.
Sarah Woofter had three hits for the Tritons. Ward (5-5) took the loss.
In game two, the Coyotes took a 2-0 lead in the first two inings, then score eight times in the third.
Collinwood not only homered and drove in two runs in the fourth inning, she was three-for-three with two runs scored and three RBI in game two. Overall, she was four-for-six on the day with four RBI and three runs scored. She now has a team-leading 24 RBI.
Jennifer Habib accounted for the only run off CSUSB senior right-hander
Tawni Baker (5-3), who allowed just four hits. Habib's solo homer in the fourth gave her team its only run of the game. The Coyotes banged out 11 hits in game two.
