Coyotes sweep past Sonoma State

Beaudette hits 2 HRs, drives in 7 runs in opener

CSUSB's Jamie Lowe drove in three runs in game against Sonoma State Monday.
Cal State San Bernardino scored 23 runs on 23 hits and got solid pitching Monday as the Coyotes swwept a CCAA conference softball doubleheader from Sonoma State by scored of 12-0 (mercy rule) and 9-4.
The wins improved the Coyotes to 11-11-1 on the season and 4-2 in the CCAA while the Seawolves dropped to 5-5 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
The other doubleheader between the two teams, scheduled for Sunday, was rained out and most likely will not be made up.
Junior left fielder Tori Beaudette blasted two home runs -- one a grand slam -- and drove in seven runs in the opener while freshman right-fielder Jacquelyn Holtzclaw went 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored in the same game.
CSUSB right-hander Debbie Shisler, subbing for senior ace Tawni Baker who was ill, scattered six hits in hurling a shutout at the Seawolves to even her 2008 record at 2-2. Brittany Williams went the distance in the circle for the Seawolves and her record is also 2-2.
The Coyotes jumped on Williams for four runs in the second inning of game one on a three-run triple by Holtzclaw and a sacrifice fly by Beaudette.
A five-run, five-hit outburst in the third made it 9-0, the big blow being Beaudette's grand slam.
CSUSB closed out the scoring in the fourth on an RBI single by Holtzclaw and a two-run homer by Beaudette.
In the nightcap, the Coyotes produced 11 hits to support their nine runs with Jamie Lowe driving in three runs while Priscillia Curiel and Jordan Dahl each collected two RBI.
Curiel's solo homer off Sonoma starter and loser Simone Brandalise (3-3) in the second got things starter. CSUSB scored four times in the third on just two hits. Ashley Collinwood plated one run with a sacrifice fly. Dahl and Curiel each singled in a run and another run was forced in when Jamie Lowe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Seawolves finally ended their scoreless inning string in the top of the fourth as Danielle Lopez walked and Megan Ochylski homered to make it 5-2.
CSUSB answered right back as Sara Bird drilled a leadoff homer in the fourth and Lowe drove in two runs with a single. Dahl made it 9-2 when a SSU infielder threw home on the fielder's choice too late to get a sliding Coyote runner.
Freshman left-hander Cassidy Lee acquitted herself quite well in front of the home crowd. Subbing for senior Jackie Jacob, who tended to a family emergency, Lee pitched 4.2 innings and gave up seven hits and ouf earned runs with three strikeouts. She is now 1-1.
Lee was relieved with two out and two on in the top of the fifth. However, Lee's replacement, Shisler, yielded a double by Ochlyski that scored both runs.
The Coyotes will host UC San Diego for a four-game series starting with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday at Coyote Softball Park.
