Tritons' 7-run inning leads to 13-5 win

Coyotes drop to 8-4 on season, 0-1 in CCAA

Centerfielder Johnnie Haas went 4-for-5 in loss to UC San Diego Thursday.
    LA JOLLA -- UC San Diego scored seven times in the seventh inning Thursday en route to a 13-5 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA conference baseball opener for both teams.
    The two teams are scheduled to play at 2 p.m. Friday, but Saturday's doubleheader has already been postponed to 11 a.m. Sunday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino.
    UCSD, the pre-season favorite to win the CCAA title and ranked 15th in the nation, benfitted from a grand slam homer off the bat of Justin Bono in the seventh to claim the victory.
    The Tritons got 15 hits off four Coyotes pitchers, rocking CSUSB starter Matt Long  for six runs on eight hits in the first 4.1 innings.  Reliever David Martin was tagged for four runs on five hits.
    Matt Rossman, 3-0, got the win although he gave up five runs on nine hits in five inings of work. Tim Shibuya and Tim Strombel shut the Coyotes out on four hits over the final four innings.
    Johnnie Haas had four hits in five at bats, Brent Planck was three-for-five and Chris Olsen was three-for-four for the Coyotes. Jason Klug had a double and drove in three runs to increase his RBI count for the season to 22.
    CSUSB is now 8-4 on the season, 0-1 in the CCAA while UCSD is 11-3 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA.
