TURLOCK -- Junior Tori Beaudette slammed a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday to lift Cal State San Bernardino's softball team to an 11-8 victory over host Cal State Stanislaus in the Mizumo Best of the West Tournament at Pedretti Park.
Earlier in the day, the Coyotes lost a tough one, 7-5, to 6th-ranked Humboldt State in the tournament opener. CSUSB will play two games Saturday and finish the tournament Sunday with two more contests.
Beaudette's heroics came after sophomore Ashley Collinwood doubled in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra innings. Senior right-hander Tawni Baker came off the bench to pitch two 2.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts to hold the Warriors at bay after they took an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
CSUSB started off hot against the Warriors, scoring four times in the first inning on two fielder's choices and an RBI single by Sara Bird. The Coyotes added two more in the third on RBI singles by Nicole Camarena and Tayler Wilson, taking a 7-1 lead over Stanislaus before the Warriors caught fire with three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to gain the lead.
In the first game, the Coyotes had a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the third against Humboldt State the defending CCAA champion, but the Lumberjacks rallied for four runs in the home half of the third for a 5-4 lead. CSUsB tied the game at five in the fifth but HSU pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-5 advantage.
HSU's pitching ace Lizzy Prescott came off the bench to hurl four shutout, no-hit innings with one walk and four strikeouts to quell the Coyote bats.
Freshman outfielder Priscilla Curiel was 2-for-3 and a run scored for CSUSB. Junior Valerie Calderon had a double and two RBI in the first inning. Collinwood drove in two runs on a single in the third. The 'Jacks touched up Coyotes pitcher Tawni Baker for 10 hits and six earned runs.
