Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego battled for 110 minutes with no decision Friday as the two CCAA women's soccer conference foes left the pitch with a 0-0 tie in double overtime in a tight match between two regionally-ranked teams.
The Tritons, who have already clinched berths in the CCAA conference tournament and the NCAA West Regional, left with a 13-2-3 record, 9-2-2 in the CCAA while the Coyotes, still with a shot at post-season participation, are now 9-5-5 overall and 6-4-3 in the CCAA South Division.
Cal State had eight shots on goal while UC San Diego had four. A few of them either glanced off one post or the other or sailed over the crossbar or just wide. Others were saved beautifully by two of the CCAA's top goalkeepers – Jessica McGovern of UCSD and
Laura Lyons of CSUSB. McGovern finished with eight saves and Lyons four. McGovern was credited with her ninth shutout of the season. Lyons now has four shutouts of the Coyotes' six shutouts this season, two of them against UCSD.
Overall, the two teams combined for 26 shots in the four periods.
CSUSB had some golden opportunities to win, particularly late in the match. Senior
Krista Feer's booming kick caromed off the far post. UCSD had a free kick by Kelly Mayo in overtime be deflected over the crossbar by Lyons. Those were just two of the near misses for either team.
The Coyotes won the first meeting of the two teams, 1-0, in double overtime in La Jolla.
The Coyotes host Cal State Dominguez Hills at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in its bid for the final berth in the CCAA tournament and a spot in the NCAA West Regional. The Coyotes are ranked No. 7 in the region and will need some help to move up.
