UCSD edges Coyotes, 2-1, in women' soccer

Tritons make 2 first-half goals stand up for victory

UC San Diego made two first-half goals stand up for the win Friday as the Tritons, ranked No. 3 in the nation and No. 1 in the Far West Region, held off Cal State San Bernardino for a 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer victory.
The win improved the Tritons to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA while the Coyotes suffered their first loss of the season and are now 3-1-1 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.
Junior Kelly Mayo scored the match-deciding goal in the 23rd minute on a wide-open header off a corner kick from sophomore Alexa Zatarain. Mayo's goal put the Tritons up 2-0. Junior Natasha Belak-Berger scored the first goal of the match in the 15th minute, collecting a long serve by senior defender Alie Avina, then turning and knocking the ball past the keeper.
UCSD dominated the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Coyotes 10-1, requiring CSUSB keeper Leslie Rhodes to make four of her five saves in the match.
The Coyotes responded in the second half, outshooting UCSD 7-2 and forcing Tritons junior goalkeeper Jessica McGovern to make four saves in the final 45 minutes.
Cal State finally cut the lead in half in the 59th minute when freshman Katie Liby controlled linked passes from Jenna Sanchez and Lauren Zellmer and drilled a shot past McGovern. Liby also had a solid try at the equalizer in the 88th minute but her shot was wide of the far post.
