Kim Morohunfola, Women’s Volleyball
4-time all-American; 2003 NCAA D-2 Player of Year
Cal State San Bernardino’s rise to national prominence in NCAA Division II women’s volleyball can be credited, in part, to the talented play of Kim Morohunfola, a 5-11 middle blocker from Upland.
In her freshman year (2000), the Coyotes went 26-8, finished second in the CCAA, advanced to the Pacific Region title match and were ranked No. 11 in the nation.
In her sophomore season (2001), CSUSB was 29-3, won its first CCAA title and was the regional runnerup and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the nation.
As junior in 2002, Kim helped the Coyotes achieve a second-straight 29-3 record, win a second CCAA title and again wind up as runnerup in the regional tournament, closing out the season ranked No. 7 in the nation.
In her senior season, Kim helped lead the Coyotes to a third straight CCAA title, the team’s first Pacific Regional title and enable CSUSB to host the NCAA D-2 National Championship tournament. The Coyotes made the Final Four, losing in the semifinals to close out a 29-5 season. CSUSB was ranked No. 3 in the nation in the final poll.
That’s three national top 10 rankings, three conference titles, a regional title and a Final Four and a team record of 114-19 in her four years at CSUSB.
Her statistics and post-season honors are a strong testament as to her talent.
She became only the fourth volleyball player in NCAA Div. II history to earn all-America honors all four years.
2000 – AVCA/NCAA second-team all-American; AVCA all-Pacific Region first team and “freshman of the year”; all CCAA-first team. She had 404 kills in 34 matches, averaging 3.51 kills per game with 127 blocks (1.10 per game) and a hitting percentage of .405.
2001 – AVCA/NCAA first-team all-American, AVCA all-region first team; all-CCAA first team. Had 411 kills (4.42 kpg), 102 blocks, and a .473 hitting percentage that was ranked No. 1 in the nation.
2002 – AVCA/NCAA second-team all-American; AVCA all-region first team; all-CCAA first-team; 372 kills (3.44 per game), 30 service aces, 141 blocks (1.31 per game) and a .357 hitting percentage. The team won its first 17 matches of season.
2003 – AVCA/NCAA D-2 national player of year and first-team all-American; Daktronics first-team all-American; AVCA all-Pacific Region first team; CCAA most valuable player and all-CCAA first team; 471 kills (3.96 per game); 128 blocks (1.08 per game), and a .424 hitting percentage.
Kim ranks No. 1 in four team categories – season hitting percentage (.473) and career hitting percentage (.414); season block assists (118); career block assists (405). She is No. 3 on the all-time kills list with 1,658 and No. 5 in the career solo blocks list with 93.
The CSUSB graduate with a degree in business finance now works as a financial analyst for Hot Topic, Inc., a company that operates 800 mall-based stores nationwide.
“I still consider my time at Cal State as the best four years of my life,” she said. “To me, playing sports gears you up for real life.”
Coyote Athletics is proud to induct Kim Morohunfola as a founding member of the Hall of Fame.
