An outside hitter from Rancho Cucamonga, Kim Ford proved to be one of the most impressive student-athletes in the history of Coyote athletics and was known for her determination and strength.

In her four years for Coach Kim Cherniss’ program, Ford became and remains the all-time leading kill leader with 1,843 and formerly held the all-time digs leader (1,543).

She is one of only three players who earned four All-American honors during her career (AVCA – three times and Daktronics – once), earned the 2002 CCAA Player of the Year honors and was a three-time Daktronics West Region performer.

She helped her teams to four straight NCAA Pacific Regional title matches and capped her career by helping the Coyotes to their first NCAA Elite Eight appearance. The Coyotes also won three CCAA titles during her career.

As a sophomore, Ford made 2001 her breakout season by earning All-CCAA, All-Pacific Region and All-American honors. She ranked 24th in the nation in kills per game and was among the top in blocks, digs and service aces. She made national news when she appeared in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd’’ for her 31 kills against UC San Diego.

In her junior season in 2002, She earned CCAA Player of the Year honors and first-team All-American honors in which she ranked first in the CCAA in kills and fifth in digs. She earned Tournament MVP honors at CSUSB’s State Farm Coyote Classic and ranked 28th in the nation in kills.

Ford and Player of the Year Kim Morohunfola, led their team in their senior season to hosting rights for the NCAA Division II Elite Eight at Coussoulis Arena. The Coyotes finished the year as an NCAA semifinalist.

Kim earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology. She and her husband, former Coyote baseball player Robert Galvan, and their children: twins Mya and Bobby Jr. and Jayden eside in Upland.

She says she loves to show her children newspaper clippings on when she played for the Coyotes and says if she could, she would love to go back and relive her college years again.

“I feel like everything happened for a reason for attending Cal State San Bernardino,’’ Kim said. “My senior year in high school, I was intent on attending a Division I school and never thought I’d attend CSUSB. It was close to my family and I had known Kim (Cherniss) for a long time and to this day, I think of her like a mom. I knew the girls I played with at CSUSB from club or against each other in high school. It’s where I met my husband.

“I consider myself happy and blessed to have played at and attended CSUSB. It felt like home.’’
