RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Another school record has fallen as the California State University San Bernardino women's track & field team won the RCC Early Bird, hosted Friday by Riverside City College at Wheelock Stadium.
The Coyotes saved their best for last, as the school record fell in their very final event of the night, the two-mile run, where junior Yoselin Canseco (San Bernardino, Calif.) crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 12:03.55, breaking teammate Jordan Dennert's (San Bernardino, Calif.) school record from the same meet last season by 14 seconds. Junior Liana Brehm (Menifee, Calif.) also finished within Dennert's mark at 12:13.50, and now sits at number two on CSUSB's all-time list. Coyote junior Diana Vera (Colton, Calif.) also scored points for the Yotes with a seventh place finish at 12:36.32.
A pair of distance relay teams finished in third place in their respective events. The distance medley relay team of Natalie Brazfield (San Bernardino, Calif.), Julia Fernandez (Indio, Calif.), Samantha Avila (Menifee, Calif.), and Lidia Barrios (Perris, Calif.) ran a time of 13:14.06, while the 4x800 meter relay team of Brazfield, Fernandez, Barrios, and freshman Lily Deaton (Menifee, Calif.) ran a time of 10:10.54.
Three Coyotes were in the top nine of the mile run, led by Brehm in third at 5:32.63, moving her into fifth on the CSUSB all-time list in the event. She was followed closely by Deaton at 5:35.87 to finish fifth, while Vera was ninth at 5:52.24.
The Coyotes won a pair of throwing events on the day. Sophomore Gianna Frank (Marysville, Wash.) won the shot put at 12.65 meters, while junior Kennedi Jones (San Diego, Calif.) recorded a toss of 11.96 meters to finish third. In the hammer throw, senior Melissa Fongod (Corona, Calif.) topped the podium at 39.90 meters to move into eighth on the all-time list. The Yotes dominated the event with five of the top seven finishers, with Frank in second at 38.30, sophomore Madi Gutierrez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) in fourth at 36.32, senior Miranda Owen (San Bernardino, Calif.) in sixth at 34.71, and sophomore Melanie Radan (Las Vegas, Nev.) was seventh at 34.55 meters.
Fongod, Owen, and Jones, finished second, third, and fourth respectively in the discus throw, while junior Natalie Paredes (Buena Park, Calif.) scored points for the Coyotes with eighth place finishes in both the discus and javelin throws.
Junior Joace Warrior (Colton, Calif.) had a big first meet in a Coyote uniform, moving into the top three of two different events on the Coyote all-time top-10 list. She placed fifth in the 60 meter hurdles at 9.20 seconds to move into the number two spot, while placing third in the long jump at 5.60 meters to move into third place on the all-time list. Also in the long jump, sophomore Sauzhane Johnson (Victorville, Calif.) placed 11th at 4.87 meters. In the triple jump, junior Mar'Azanae Townsend (San Diego, Calif.) moved to number seven on the all-time list with a leap of 9.58 meters.
Warrior was also the top Coyote finisher in the 60 meter dash, placing 10th overall with a time of 7.964. She was a whopping one one-thousandth of a second faster than freshman La Sheau Hayden (Bakersfield, Calif.)Â at 7.965, while junior Rymiyah Pringle-Hamilton (Oakland, Calif.) placed 15th at 8.03 seconds. Cierra Ellis (Eastvale, Calif.) was the fourth Yote across the line in the event at 8.16 meters. Each member of the quartet moved into the all-time top-10 list with their efforts, in fifth, sixth, eighth, and 10th respectively.
CSUSB returning national qualifier Coryssa Hope (Riverside, Calif.) looked sharp in her first meet of 2026, leading the Coyotes in the 300 meter dash. She placed seventh overall at 41.06 seconds, with Ellis also in the top 10 at 41.81 seconds. Pringle-Hamilton placed 11th at 41.94 seconds for CSUSB, while freshman Jasmine Jaramillo (Lakewood, Calif.) ran a time of 42.33 to place 12th.
Rounding out the top finishers on the day for the Yotes were the competitors in the 600-meter run. Senior Kai Marroquin (Rosemead, Calif.) moved into number two on the all-time top 10 list in the event at 1:39.50, with junior Amanda Lynch (San Bernardino, Calif.) moving onto the list in eighth place with a run of 1:54.73.Â
The Coyotes will be off until February 28, when they travel to Claremont to compete in the Rossi Relays.
