ALISO VIEJO, Calif. - For the second season in a row, Cal State San Bernardino softball senior infielder
Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) has been named the CCAA Player of the Year.
Tosi is the fifth student-athlete to win CCAA player of the Year honors in consecutive seasons. The senior third baseman led the conference in batting average (.467), hits (79), home runs (14), runs batted in (47), total bases (139), and slugging percentage (.822). Tosi is also ranked top in NCAA Division II in hits and total bases. She was a three-time FloCollege/CCAA Player of the Week and reached base safely in 26 consecutive games. Tosi was also a First Team All-Conference selection, and helped lead CSUSB to a CCAA Tournament berth for the third straight season.
Senior
Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) was named to the CCAA Second Team All-Conference. She is CSUSB's second leading hitter this season, batting .324 with 47 hits, 14 runs batted in, 25 runs scored, and 14 extra base hits. Galliano appeared in all but one game this season for the Coyotes, making 41 starts in the leadoff position.
Junior
Alex Hooper (Auburn, Calif.) and seniors
Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.),
Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.), and
Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) all earned Honorable Mention nods.
Hooper appeared in 32 games for the Coyotes, batting .258 with 11 runs scored and 10 RBIs splitting time between second base and shortstop. Goris ranked second on the Coyotes with eight long balls on the season, batting .293 with 28 runs batted in.
Blackmon and Vargas split time as the ace of the CSUSB pitching staff, with 31 and 34 appearances respectively. Blackmon enters the conference tournament as the CCAA's leader with 109 strikeouts on the season, with eight wins on the season. Vargas had CSUSB's lowest earned run average at 2.64, while picking up a team-high 11 wins and striking out 65.
The Coyotes will open CCAA Tournament play on Tuesday when they play the hosts from Sonoma State University at 2:30 p.m.
