Three School Records Fall as Women's Track & Field Opens Season at RCC Early Bird

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's track & field team saw three school records fall on Friday as the Coyotes opened their season at the Riverside City College Early Bird.

The Coyotes won five events on the day, starting from the very first event of the morning, when senior Jaclyn Brown (Simi Valley, Calif.) took the top spot in the javelin throw. She recorded a toss of 32.58 meters, less than half a meter from her best toss as a member of the Coyotes.

Sprinter Hailey Hunt (Winnetka, Calif.) got her senior season off to a strong start with a pair of event wins, coming in the 60 and 300 meter dashes. She set a new school record in the 60 with a time of 7.52 seconds, while running a 300 time of 39.96 seconds.

Also in the 60-meter dash, the Yotes took each of the top three spots, as senior Amari Weatherford (Southeast San Diego, Calif.) placed second with a time of 7.55 seconds, with grad student Alexandra Ackerman (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) placing third at 7.68 seconds. Weatherford's time would have been good for a school record, if not for Hunt.

Senior Alexis White (San Bernardino, Calif.) earned CSUSB's fourth top spot on the day, breaking her own school record in the 600-meter run. White's time of 1:34.65 was nearly four seconds faster than the event's second-place finisher.

CSUSB's final event win of the day came in the 4x400-meter relay. Featuring Prishencia Nnoham (Palmdale, Calif.) Aiyana Allen-Jefferson (Riverside, Calif.), Weatherford, and White, the new-look version of the team that advanced to nationals last season crossed the finish line in a time of 3:58.69 on Friday.

Another school record fell for the Coyotes in the two-mile run, where distance runner Jordan Dennert (San Bernardino, Calif.) put herself in the record book for the first time with a run of 12:17.71.

Also in the 300-meter run, won by Hunt, junior Cierra Ellis (Eastvale, Calif.) looked sharp in her first race as a Coyote, placing third with a sprint of 40.23 seconds. She was followed closely by Coryssa Hope (Riverside, Calif.), who placed fifth at 41.58 seconds. In White's 600-meter win, Allen-Jefferson scored a point with an eighth-place finish at 1:50.19.

The relay team of Hailey Lynk (Banning, Calif.), Kasey Plumb (Mentone, Calif.), Kai Marroquin (Rosemead, Calif.), and Gabriella Romero (Highland, Calif.) finished second in a pair of races on the day. First, the team ran a time of 13:24.03 in the distance medley relay, followed by a time of 10:29.34 in the 4x800 meter relay.

The 4x100 meter relay team, comprised of Nnoham, Hope, Ellis, and junior Briana Miller (San Bernardino, Calif.), placed second in their event with a time of 49.27.

Rounding out CSUSB's scorers on the track was freshman Sauzhane Johnson (Victorville, Calif.), who placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.89 seconds.

Away from the track, CSUSB had three scorers in both the hammer and discus throws. In the hammer, Elizabeth Rushing (Oakdale, Calif.) was the top Coyote finisher at third place with a toss of 41.56 meters. Liz Ghazanchian (Glendale, Calif.) was fifth at 35.35 meters, while freshman Gianna Frank (Marysville, Wash.) finished seventh at 29.87 meters. Ghazanchian was the top Coyote finisher in the discus, placing second at 36.86 meters, with junior Miranda Owen (San Bernardino, Calif.) in fourth at 34.79 meters and Brown eighth at 32.00 meters.

Frank was the top Yote in the shot put on Friday, placing second overall at 11.88 meters, with graduate student Mayra Mejia Haller (Fontana, Calif.) in eighth at 10.22 meters.

Rounding out the top CSUSB finishers, the Yotes had a pair of top-five finishers in the long jump. Senior Emily Nguyen (Westminster, Calif.) was third at 5.29 meters, while freshman Jahdai Dwyer (San Jacinto, Calif.) was fifth at 5.00 meters.

The Coyotes will return to action on Saturday, February 22 at the Rossi Relays, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Burns Track Complex.
