Women's Basketball Drops Conference Opener to Dominguez Hills

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills 75-64 in the CCAA opener for both teams Thursday evening at Coussoulis Arena.

With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 2-4 overall on the season.

Cal State Dominguez Hills narrowly outscored CSUSB 15-13 in the opening quarter to take a two-point lead to the second. The Yotes got four points from redshirt sophomore Jaushlynn Ruffin (Compton, Calif.) to lead the hosts.

Senior Arianna Harper (Los Angeles, Calif.) tied the score at 15-15 for the Coyotes with a bucket on the first possession of the second quarter, but the Toros would score the next 14 points unanswered to take control of the contest. By halftime, the Yotes had narrowed the gap, but still trailed by eight at 31-23. Six of CSUSB's 10 points in the quarter came from senior guard Rebecca Saidoff (West Hills, Calif.), who made a couple of triples.

CSUSB trimmed the deficit down to just five with under a minute to play in the third quarter, but still trailed by the same eight points headed to the fourth. Seven different players found the scoresheet in the third for Cal State San Bernardino, with 18 points coming from the bench. Redshirt junior Hunter Simon (Temecula, Calif.) scored five bench points for CSUSB to lead the Yotes in period number three.

The Coyotes and Toros went punch for punch in quarter number four, but CSUSB couldn't close the gap to less than six. Cal State Dominguez Hills pulled away late to clinch the 11-point victory.

Ruffin finished as CSUSB's leading scorer on the evening with 11 points while matching a team-high of seven rebounds. Sophomore Princess Cassell (Eastvale, Calif.) was the only other Coyote in double figures, posting 10 points.

Next up for the Coyotes, they will host Cal State Los Angeles at Coussoulis Arena on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
