Women's Basketball Quiets Chico State

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team picked up a crucial 52-39 victory over Chico State on Saturday afternoon in California Collegiate Athletic Association inside Coussoulis Arena.

With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 11-11 overall on the season and 9-8 in the CCAA.

San Bernardino looked hot right from the jump, outscoring Chico State 15-7 in the opening quarter. The contest was knotted at 7-7 with three and a half minutes remaining in the first, but the Yotes closed the quarter on an 8-0 run, thanks in part to a pair of Samantha Henley (Ventura, Calif.) triples, to take command of the game.

The Coyotes ran their lead to as many as 11 late in the second quarter, but a surge from the Wildcats in the final minutes cut the CSUSB lead down to 26-20 by the time the halftime buzzer sounded. Senior Auren Isaacson (Chula Vista, Calif.) notched a pair of threes in the second to lead all players with six points.

Chico cut the San Bernardino lead down to one at 28-27 four and a half minutes into the third quarter, but the Yotes took the reins from there, scoring 10 of the quarter's final 12 points to carry a 38-29 lead to the fourth. Senior Destiny Jackson (Hayward, Calif.) played all 10 minutes of the quarter, and led all players with four points.

The Coyotes continued to hold down the fort defensively, holding Chico State to 10 points in the fourth to seal the vital win. Henley posted seven points in the fourth to help wrap up the contest .

Henley was the game's leading scorer with 16 points in the win, while Jackson and junior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) each posted double-doubles. Jackson notched 15 points and 10 boards, while Dufresne added 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Saturday's game was the first time CSUSB held an opponent under 40 points since they allowed 38 to San Francisco State on January 14, 2017.

Next up for the Coyotes, they will head on the road for a contest at San Francisco State on Thursday evening. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
