WAIMEA, HAWAII – Cal State San Bernardino freshman golfer
Kamron Hopson shot two-under-par for 36 holes to help his Yotes team finish in fifth place at the 2023 Dennis Rose Invitational at Hapuna Golf Course on the big island of Hawaii.
Hopson shot a two-under par 70 to go with his one-under par 71 on Friday to tie for sixth-place in the individual portion of the tournament.
The former Redlands High School golfer won a CIF Southern Section title in 2021 and helped his team win three straight Citrus Belt League titles during his prep career.
It was his third-straight sub-par round of the week, having posted a 71 in the final round of the Hawaii-Pacific Shark Shootout on the nearby Mauna Lea Golf Course earlier this week. CSUSB wound up in ninth place in that 54-hole event.
The Yotes team posted a score of 291 on Friday and 287 Saturday on the 6,875-yard, par-72 layout to finish Saturday at two-over-par 578.

John Kim, who wound up in third place in the Shark Shootout with a 54-hole total of 208, eight under par, tied for 20
th spot in the Dennis Rose event with rounds of 71 and 73 for an even par 144 total.
Freshman Chace Frye posted scores of 76 and 73 to finish at five-over-par 149 in a tie for 43
rd place. Sophomore
John Vrzich had rounds of 73 and 77 for a six-over-par total of 150 and tie for 46
th place.

Trent Fitzgerald bounced back on Saturday after shooting a nine-over-par 81 on Friday with a 1-under-par 71 to finish at 152 for 36 holes and in 54
th place.
The Yotes team will take a break from competitive golf through the holidays and will start its spring season in February.
University of Texas, Permian Basin – located in an area of Texas better known for "Friday Night Lights" prep football – dominated both of these Hawaii tournaments, winning the Shark Shootout at 11-under par and this event at 19 under par, led by no less than six international players. UTPB's Sangh Park of South Korea was the medalist Saturday with a 10-under par score of 134 after an opening round of 62.
Cal State San Marcos finished third, Stanislaus State was sixth, Cal State East Bay took seventh and Cal State Monterey Bay was eighth in the field of 17 teams.
