WAIMEA, Hawaii – Cal State San Bernardino's junior golfer
John Kim continued his impresssive play during this fall season, shooting eight-under-par for 54 holes to finish third in the Southwest Airlines Shark Shootout at Mauna Lea Golf Course Tuesday.
In the Yotes first four tournaments of 2023-24, Kim has three top three finishes including medalist honors at the Chico State Wildcat Invitational and second place at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Saticoy, Calif.
Eight of Kim's 12 rounds of golf in four tournaments have been par or better.
Kim shot an opening round 67, backed it up with a 71 on Monday and then closed with a two-under par 70 for a 54-hole total of 208, eight under par, just one shot back of first place on the par-72 Mauna Lea layout.
Meanwhile, the Yotes team wound up ninth in the Shark Shootout field of 16 teams recording a collective 17 over par for 54 holes at 581.
Trent Fitzgerald tied for 46
th place with rounds of 78, one-under-par 71 and 76 for a 228 total, nine over par. Chayce Frye tied for 51
st place with rounds of 76, 77 and 73 for a 226 total, 10 over par.
Kamron Hopson tied for 56
th in the field with rounds of 76, 81 and a closing round of one-under-par 71 to wind up at 228, 12 over par.
John Vrzich finished at 25 over par in 83
rd place on rounds of 78-75-88 for a 241 total, 25 over par.
University of Texas-Permian Basin won the team title with an 11-under par total. CCAA conference member Cal State East Bay finished third at five-over-par. Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Monterey Bay tied for fourth at seven-over-par.
CCAA conference members Stanislaus State, Sonoma State and CSUSB took seventh, eighth and ninth and Cal State San Marcos took 12
th.
Tournament medalist honors went to Francis Bautista of Cal State Dominguez Hills who shot rounds of 68-72-67 to tie Colin Huang of Sonoma State for medalist honors at 7-under-par. Huang shot rounds of 64-76-67. Both men were nine-under par for 54 holes. Kim was one shot back at 208.
UP NEXT: The Yotes close out their fall golf season with a 54-hole tournament this Thursday and Friday at the Dennis Rose Invitational hosted by University of Hawaii-Hilo at Hapuna Golf Course, also located in Waimea, Hawaii. The golf team will then take a break before opening the spring season at the Fujikara Invitational hosted by Cal State San Marcos at Shadowridge Golf Course on Feb. 12-13, 2024.
