SEASIDE –
Trent Fitzgerald, a sophomore transfer from Cuyamaca Community College in San Diego County, led Cal State San Bernadino's men's golf team to an eighth-place finish Tuesday in the 2023 Otter Invitational hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay.
The host Otters captured the team title with a 3-under-par score of 861 for 54 holes on the 6,860-yard, par-72 Bayonet Golf Course. Chico State as second, one stroke back at 862 and Cal State East Bay was third, four shots back at 865.
Fitzgerald opened the tournament Monday with a first round, 2-under-par 70, followed by rounds of 1-over-par 73 and a final round 77 to finish at 220, four over par for the tournament.
Fitzgerald tied for first place in scoring on par-3 holes, finishing at 1-under par. He recorded 33 pars and nine birdies in his 54 holes.
His Yotes teammate, freshman Chayce Frye from Murrieta was playing the tournament as an individual and did not factor in the team scoring, but managed his best effort of the season with rounds of 77-73-74, for an 8-over-par total of 224 to finish in 34
th spot overall.
Junior
John Kim, who had an incredible past two weeks, winning one tournament in a playoff and losing another tournament in a playoff to earn CCAA player of the week twice, found himself way back after a first round 81, but came with with rounds of 73 and 74 to wind up in 36
th place with a 54-hole total of 226, 10 over par.
John Vrzich, a sophomore transfer from Nevada-Reno, started slow with a first round 83, but came back in the afternoon round on Monday with a two-under-par 70 and closed Tuesday with a 74 to finish tied for 40
thplace at 227, 11 over par. Vrzick had 10 birdies. He and teammate Kim both recorded eagles on one hole in the event.
Freshman
Kamron Hopson from Redlands also had 10 birdies but wound up in 59
th place with rounds of 74-79-80 for a total of 233, 17 over par.
Returning player
Cole Obrigewitsch finished in 60
th place with rounds of 77, 82 and 76 for a 19-over par total of 235.
Like his teammate Frye, Benjamin Drury was playing as individual and his score did not count for the team total. Drury shot rounds of 87-83-83 to finish in 74
th place with a 253 total, 37 over par.
UP NEXT: The Yotes head for Hawaii next week to compete in two tournaments.
Up first is the Hawaii Pacific University Shark Shootout on Oct. 23-24, followed by the Dennis Rose Invitational at University of Hawaii-Hilo on Oct. 26-27. Results will be posted on csusbathletics.com at the close of each tournament.
