SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CSUSB men's soccer team dominated Friday's match against Cal Poly Humboldt, winning 5-1 for their first conference win of the season. Their five goals against the Lumberjacks is the most CSUSB has scored since the final game of the regular season last year, when they defeated
Cal State San Marcos 5-0. With the win, the Yotes improve to 5-3-5 on the season while extending their win streak against the Lumberjacks to eight consecutive games, dating back to 2013.
After scoring his first goal of the season last Sunday against Cal State Los Angeles,
Brian Castillo picked up right where he left off with a goal in just the 11
th minute of the game on Friday to give the Yotes a 1-0 lead. The Lumberjacks would even the score in the 28
th minute to bring the score even at 1-1. However, this would not hold for long as junior midfielder
Jonathan Mayen put the Yotes back on top with his first goal of the season in the 31
st minute.
The game would remain quiet for the rest of the first half, as well as the first 30 minutes of the second half.
Castillo then broke the silence in the 75
th minute with his second goal of the game. Just two minutes later, Mayen also scored his second goal of the game to give the Yotes a commanding 4-1 lead. Then in the 87
th minute, freshman defender
Pedro Prieto put the nail in the coffin with his first goal of his collegiate career.
Jeronimo Valdepena,
Nicklaus Sullivan,
Paul Iniguez (2), and Mayen all earned assists in the game.
Goalkeepers John Samano and
Aiden Hanes combined for five saves en route to the win.
