LOS ANGELES (Feb. 23, 2017) — Lucas Martinez and
Dominic Campeau each had two hits in the Coyotes' 3-2 loss to Cal State L.A in a CCAA game Thursday night at Reeder Field.
CSUSB (0-9, 0-1 CCAA) and CSULA (8-3, 1-0) resume their series Friday night with another 9-inning game in L.A.
The Coyotes fell behind 2-0 in the second on Sean Watkins' two-run triple.
Martinez cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third. His single through the right side scored
Jordan Simon, who led off the inning with a single to short.
CSUSB then tied the game at 2-2 on a ground-out RBI by Simon in the fourth. Campeau reached on a single to the pitcher, and advanced to third when
Tyler Van Marter reached on a two-base error by the shortstop.
But CSULA got the game-winning run when pitcher Christian Broussard helped himself in the fifth. Hitting in the third hole, he delivered a run-scoring double to left.
Matthew Moriarty got the loss for CSUSB after throwing 4 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, five walks. All three runs allowed were earned.
Brian Conley kept the Coyotes in the game in relief with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.
Broussard went 7 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.
