Coyotes live for another day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA JOLLA (April 25, 2015) -- One more day.

CSUSB has destiny in its hands after sweeping UC San Diego on Saturday in CCAA softball, winning 4-1 and 6-1. The victories keep the Coyotes' hopes alive at earning a CCAA Tournament berth on the final day of the regular season. Should the Coyotes defeat the Tritons twice Sunday, they will finish one-half game ahead of Chico State for the fourth and final tourney berth.

Anything less will end the 2015 season as Chico State swept Cal State Dominguez Hills in its four-game series in Carson. CSUSB (27-23, 19-14 CCAA) enters Sunday 1 1/2 games behind the Wildcats and Chico State (21-15 CCAA) will be forced to scoreboard (or livestats) watch.

Game 1: Coyotes 4, Tritons 1
Down 1-0 through two innings, the Coyotes got going with a two-run third, then added single runs in the sixth and seventh for the win.

Victoria Lievanos singled to right that scored Melissa Roberts and Nicole Nobbe scored on the play when the third baseman committed an error.

Kaylee Gemmell reached base on an error in the sixth that brought in Mary Menicucci, who doubled to right center. And then Lievanos came through again, this time on a RBI-double to left center that scored Nobbe.

That was all the production sophomore LHP Cassandra Williams needed. She struck out four, walked five and gave up just four hits to improve to 15-11.

Game 2: Coyotes 6, Tritons 1
The Coyotes made sure of the sweep with a five-run sixth that broke open a 1-1 tie game.

Lievanos had an RBI-single that scored Nobbe, who reached on her school-record 23rd double of the season.

Tied at 1-1 through five, Lievanos opened the inning with a single and Menicucci and Williams walked to load the bases.

Thalia Ortiz reached on a fielder's choice that cut down pinch-runner Brittany Resendez at the plate.

Gemmell came through with a run-scoring single to center and Roberts earned an RBI on a bases-loaded walk for a 3-1 lead.

Arianna Hernandez answered with a two-run single to right and Roberts later came in to score on an error and CSUSB led 6-1.

Sophomore RHP Jamie Nelson was outstanding in her seven innings. She retired the first nine batters in order and did not give up a hit until the leadoff hitter in the fifth.

Lievanos had three hits and Alyssa Ramos had two.
