Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS (Feb. 7, 2015) -- Freshman Caitlyn Olan had a day to remember in her short, one week career with eight RBI on the day as the Coyotes swept Cal State San Marcos 6-4 and 5-1 in nonconference softball Saturday afternoon.
The Coyotes (2-2) resume nonconference play Tuesday afternoon at Azusa Pacific.
Game 1: Coyotes 6, Cal State San Marcos 4
Olan wasted little time making an impact with a bases-loaded opportunity in the first.
Olan connected on a single up the middle the drove in Nicole Nobbe (single) and Thalia Ortiz (walk), but the Cougars created a double play on a throw-out to third to retire Alyssa Ramos (walk) and Olan, who was caught off first.
The Cougars answered with one run in the third and two in the fourth for a 3-2 lead before Olan came though again, this time in the fifth.
Nobbe reached on an error and Ortiz (walk) and Ramos (single) created another bases-loaded chance for the freshman.
Olan then cleared the bases with a triple to right and CSUSB led 5-3. Cassandra Williams came through with the fourth run of the inning on a single to left that scored Olan.
The Cougars cut the lead to 6-4 with a run in the sixth, but reliever Jamie Nelson, who threw the final three innings for the Coyotes, issued a 1-2-3 seventh for the victory.
Williams got the win in four innings with six strikeouts. Nelson had two and did not issue a walk.
Williams joined Olan with two hits.
Game 2: Coyotes 5, Cal State San Marcos 1
Good things tend to happen when Nobbe reaches base and the All-American set the tone in the first with a lead-off double to left center. She came around to score on an Olan sac fly to center.
In the second, Briana Quintana hit a one-out single to right that scored Kaylee Gemmell and CSUSB led 2-0 through two.
CSUM scored its only run of the game in the fourth, and the game remained 2-1 CSUSB until the seventh.
Williams singled to left and scored pinch-runner Brittany Resendez. That brought up Olan, who came through with a two-run double to left that scored Nobbe and Monica Maddox.
Seven Coyotes had one hit apiece.
On the mound, Williams threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk.
