Hot arms, hot bats spell doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO (Feb. 18, 2015) — The Coyotes extended their season-best winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep over Adelphi University of New York, 3-0 and 8-4 at Coyote Park on Thursday afternoon.

The schedule gets a little bit tougher this week as the Coyotes (8-5 overall) play host to No. 3-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay (7-0) with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.

Game 1: Coyotes 3, Adelphi 0
Sophomore LHP Cassandra Williams stood out with a four-hit shutout and faced only 28 batters in the seven inning contest.

She had three strikeouts, two walks and was in complete control against the Panthers (0-5).

CSUSB got rolling in the first inning on Victoria Lievanos' solo home run that was crushed to deep left field.  Then in the second, freshman Kaylee Gemmell ripped a leadoff shot over the center field wall for a 2-0 Coyotes' lead.

CSUSB earned its final run of the game in the fifth on Lievanos' sacrifice fly that scored Arianna Hernandez, who led off on a hit by pitch.

All-American and this week's National Player of the Week Nicole Nobbe and Gemmell each had two hits for CSUSB.

Game 2: Coyotes 8, Adelphi 4
CSUSB got rolling again in the first inning, scoring five runs on four hits and one error and never looked back.

They sent nine batters to the plate and Lievanos and Alyssa Ramos each had RBI-doubles to key the inning. Brianna Quintana had an RBI-single and Hernandez punched out a two-out, two-run double to complete the scoring.

Nobbe, who singled to lead off the second, came around to score when Alyssa Ramos reached on an error by the Panthers' second basemen.

Williams then led off the third with a solo home run  and Lievanos gained an RBI on a bases-loaded walk.

Both Nobbe and Williams each had two hits as the Coyotes finished with nine hits that included five extra-base knocks.

Williams (7-3) earned the win again. She threw four innings and had two strikeouts. Freshman RHP Jamie Nelson got the save with three innings of quality relief. She allowed just two hits and one run that was earned.
