Baker the Playmaker

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 17, 2015) – Senior Briana Baker may not score the most points for the Coyotes, but there are many other ways to impact a game. And what she did in the final minute of play Saturday night proved it.

Baker made two big plays that allowed the Coyotes to pull out a 54-52 come-from-behind victory over visiting Cal State East Bay in CCAA women's play at Coussoulis Arena. Her first big play factored in the Pioneers turning over the ball on a shot clock violation with the Coyotes down by two, 49-47, with 46 seconds left.

Then after Chelsea Barnes made two free throws to give the Coyotes in the lead 50-49 with 30 seconds remaining, Baker created a steal in the back court and went to the line. She hit both free throws for a three-point Coyotes lead and put her team in command.

"Bri came up with a huge steal late that really sealed it for us,'' head coach Renee Jimenez said. "She's truly the anchor to our defense.''

CSUSB trailed throughout most of the game and overcame an 11-point deficit for its fourth straight victory. The Coyotes, now 11-3 overall and 7-3 CCAA, were led by Barnes' 20 points on 6 of 12 shooting. She also was 8 of 9 from the free throw line. Junior Briana Harden was next with 12 points and 12 rebounds – her ninth double-double of the year. Junior All-CCAA guard Alexcia Mack was the only other Coyote in double figures with 10 points, and four assists with three steals.

CSUSB overcame a 5-for-22 start from the field and went into halftime down by four, 28-24, on the strength of an 11-2 run.

But the Coyotes never could crack the Pioneers' lead until the final minute. Adriana Brodie got the Coyotes to within a point of the lead on a jumper with 12:42 left that put the score 38-37, CSUEB.

The Coyotes' pivotal run started with Mack hitting two free throws, then another and CSUSB trailed 49-47 with 1:56 left.

That set up the Pioneers' possession that Baker stopped. As time was running out on the shot clock, Baker tapped the ball away from a Pioneer player and the ball trickled out of bounds. CSUEB had just one second left on the shot clock and it was hit with a turnover.

Brodie went to the line and hit the front end of a two-shot free throw to cut the lead to one at 49-48 with 37 seconds left. The second shot was off and grabbed by Harden. After a CSUSB timeout, Barnes was fouled and hit both shots for a three-point cushion that set up Baker's steal immediately after.

CSUEB had a chance to tie, but it missed two three-pointers and had another chance, but Barnes earned a steal, was fouled and put the Coyotes up 54-49 on a pair of free throws.

Stephanie Lopez ended the scoring on a 3-pointer for the final two-point margin.

The Coyotes created 18 CSUEB turnovers that translated into 21 points. They outscored the Pioneers 21-10 off miscues.

"This was a huge win,'' Jimenez said.  "We are really figuring out that no matter what's happening offensively, our defense will always give us a chance.''

Lopez led the Pioneers (9-7, 4-6) with 15 points.
