The frame work is in place for the Coyotes women's basketball program after coach Renee Jimenez's first year in 2013-14.
CSUSB went 9-16 overall with a pair of season sweeps over Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay, capped by a national television audience on the CBS College Sports Network when the Coyotes defeated CSUMB last Feb. 15.
Â
Jimenez came to CSUSB after five successful season at CSUMB (2008-13). Her teams totaled one CCAA regular-season championship, one CCAA Tournament title and played in each of the past three NCAA Tournaments. Those accolades produced a 97-46 (.678) record, the best in terms of percentage of any sport in Otter Athletics history.
Â
Results on the court? Check. Results off the court? Her teams understand the need for excelling in the classroom and in life situations. The Otters boasted a 100-percent graduation rate and gave back to the Monterey Bay area in terms of team community-service projects.
Â
Inheriting a three-win program when named head coach for the Otters for the 2008-09 season, CSUMB turned in an 11-win campaign that first season and improved to 18-9 in 2009-10.
Â
But the next three seasons is when Jimenez’s program turned the corner on a national level.
Â
The list of firsts for Otter basketball grew as CSUMB finished 27-4, captured its first CCAA regular-season title, reached its highest national rating in school history and received the school’s first NCAA Tournament bid. And on a personal note, her peers honored Jimenez as the CCAA Coach of the Year.
Â
The following season the Otters earned their second consecutive 20-win season, were runner-ups in the CCAA regular season, captured the conference tournament title and the automatic NCAA Tourney berth.
Â
And in 2012-13, CSUMB returned to the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Round of 32 for the second time in three seasons and featured another 20-win season.
Â
Jimenez recruits athletes who defend and work hard. In 2010–11. CSUMB led the nation in scoring defense, allowing a stingy 51.2 points per game. Included in that was a CCAA record-setting performance in which they allowed Cal State East Bay only 21 points in a 51–21 Otter win on Feb. 3, 2011.Â
Â
Jimenez’s student–athletes have earned 12 All-CCAA awards, one CCAA Newcomer of the Year award (Nikki Beckman in 2013) and five CCAA All-Tournament team selections, including 2012 tourney MVP Brittani Jefferson. Several of her players also have picked up academic honors, including
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII and CCAA All–Academic recognition.
Â
Jimenez served as an assistant for Beth Burns at San Diego State for three seasons (2005-08). The Aztecs improved quickly in that stretch, going from a program that won three games prior to their arrival to an 18-13 slate in 2007-08 squad.
Â
Prior to joining the SDSU coaching staff, Jimenez spent one year at Stanford University, serving as an intern for head coach Tara VanDerveer, helping the Cardinal women’s basketball program reach its 10th NCAA Elite Eight. While there she served as the team's video coordinator among other coaching duties.
Â
Jimenez played three seasons at San Francisco State from 2001-04, finishing her career as the Gators’ all-time leader in 3-point field goals. The two-year team captain also set two school season records including most 3-pointers made (62).
Â
A 2004 SFSU graduate with a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies and kinesiology, Jimenez also competed for one year at Ventura College for head coach Ned Mircetic, helping the Pirates to the 2001 California junior college championship.
