SAN BERNARDINO -- Junior RHP Stephanie Luhman did everything she could to keep the Coyotes within closing distance of No. 20 UC San Diego, but CSUSB was dealt a 2-1 loss in the opener, and 13-4 in the final game during Saturday's doubleheader.
Luhman allowed just five hits and two runs -- both unearned -- but the Coyotes mustered only four hits in the opener.
CSUSB is now off until March 26 when it entertains Hawaii-Hilo.
Game 1: UC San Diego 2, Coyotes 1
Alyssa Ramos, Nicole Nobbe, Mary Menicucci and Kristen Lopez had the four base hits against the Tritons, but the Coyotes scored their only run of the game in the fourth.
Trailing 1-0, Tiffany McIntosh led off the fourth inning with a walk, and pinch-runner Brittany Resendez worked her way around the basepaths and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Menicucci.
But the Tritons got the game-winner in the seventh and the Coyotes had a chance as Lopez reached second base with two outs, but the game ended on a ground out.
Game 2: UC San Diego 13, Coyotes 4 6 innings
The Coyotes trailed early, down 9-0 through two innings, before scoring four runs in the third.
Victoria Lievanos hit a base-loaded single up the middle that scored Ramos, and Menicucci followed with a two-run double down the left-field line that brought in Nobbe (double) and McIntosh (walk).
Ortiz later added an RBI without swinging the bat, reaching base on a bases-loaded walk.
But UCSD regained control with solo runs in the fourth and fifth, then two in the sixth.
Nobbe and Menicucci were each 3-for-4.
