LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Cal State San Bernardino played shortened games Sunday afternoon on the third and final day of the Desert Stinger tourney, hosted by Montana State-Billings.
The Coyotes lost 8-0 to No. 23 Dixie State in a game shortened in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule, and then came back in an 11-3 win over the University of Mary in six innings.
CSUSB (5-2 overall) begins CCAA play this Friday and Saturday at home against defending CCAA and NCAA West Region champion Humboldt State.
No. 23 Dixie State 8, Coyotes 0 (5 innings)
Freshman Thalia Ortiz had two of the Coyotes' three hits and Victoria Lievanos had the other, but the Coyotes could not get on track against the Red Storm.
Ortiz led off the game with a single and ripped a double to right center in the fourth.
Lievanos had a lead-off single in the fifth.
Cassandra Williams was the starting pitcher for the Coyotes and took the loss. She gave up an unearned run in the first and later threw in the sixth.
Coyotes 11, Mary 3 (6 innings)
Williams ripped a three-run homer to right in the fourth and junior Mary Menicucci ended the game with a leadoff homer to left center to dispose of the Marauders from Bismarck, N.D.
Williams helped the Coyotes' cause with a two-run single up the middle in the first and Ortiz had a two-run single in the second.
And then with the Coyotes up 5-3 through three innings, Nicole Nobbe's two-out RBI single scored Darian Manuz, who led off the inning with a walk. Two batters later, Williams connected on the decisive hit.
Manuz had a triple in the fifth and came around to scored on a sacrifice fly from Ortiz.
Williams earned the win and improved to 4-2 on the year with three innings of work. Stephanie Luhman had the save with three innings of quality relief.
