Box Score SEASIDE – The Coyotes showed a national television audience to one of their better games in 2013-14, earning a 67-51 victory over host Cal State Monterey Bay in what was billed as the Division II national game of the week on the CBS College Sports Network.
Sophomore
Alexcia Mack scored a game-high 18 points and scored two 3-pointers in a key late first-half stretch that allowed CSUSB to gain control.
The Coyotes (6-15, 5-13 CCAA), who trailed by five (16-11) with 6:39 remaining in the first half, built a pivotal 21-8 run to close the half with five different Coyotes factoring in the run.
Mack hit two 3s, while
Tatiana Dunlap added five and
Jazzmyn Davis and
Tayllor Gipson each had four points and the Coyotes were never threatened again. Sophomore
Adriana Brodie also had two points in the run.
The Coyotes never trailed in the second half and built a lead as large as 20 on another 3-pointer from Mack that put CSUSB up 61-41 with 5:15 left.
CSUSB shot 50 percent from the field on 12-of-24 shots in the final half.
Davis had 11 points and Gipson had 10. Brodie had nine points with 10 rebounds and senior
Trinidee Trice had five points with six rebounds and six assists.
Chezla Self led the Otters (5-16, 2-16) with 16 points.
The game was a homecoming for Coyotes head coach
Renee Jimenez. The first-year mentor spent five seasons with the Otters and helped her team reach three consecutive NCAA tourneys, one CCAA regular-season title and one CCAA tourney title.
CSUSB returns to Coussoulis Arena for the final time when it takes on Sonoma State (Friday) and San Francisco State (Saturday).
