Coyotes rally late for 75-71 win over Cal State East Bay

CSUSB scores six points in final 11 seconds

Freshman Tatiana Dunlap scored a season-best 22 points with 10 rebounds against Cal State East Bay.
Box Score HAYWARD -- A never-say-die creed has been a constant for the Coyotes over the course of the 2013-14 season.

The end results may not have paid off in victories, but what the Coyotes showed Thursday night proved that they are never out of a game.

Trailing 71-69 with 20 seconds left, the Coyotes came back with efforts on both ends of the court by both Briana Baker and Tatiana Dunlap in a 75-71 win over Cal State East Bay in CCAA play.

The victory snapped the Coyotes' losing streak at six as they now take a 5-15 overall record and 4-13 CCAA slate into Saturday morning's contest at Cal State Monterey Bay that will be televised nationally on the CBS College Sports Network.

After the Pioneers pulled ahead 71-69 with 20 seconds to go, Dunlap gathered up a rebound and scored on the put-back to tie with 11 seconds.

On the very next play, Briana Baker stole the ball, drove to the lane and scored the go-ahead bucket with just one second left.

And then for good measure, Dunlap stole the inbounds pass, was fouled and hit two free throws for the final score.

Dunlap played masterfully with 22 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in two weeks. She was 8-of-9 from the floor, scored on her only 3-point attempt, and was 5-of-6 from the line. She also had two assists and two steals in 31 minutes.

Sophomore Alexcia Mack added 13 and Baker 10 with a team-high six assists.

CSUSB scored a season-high 48 second-half points and shot a season-high 47.1 percent from the floor for the game.

Much of the Coyotes offense down the stretch has come from their ability to earn offensive rebounds. They held the advantage over the Pioneers (15-8) and outscored CSUEB 17-5 on second-chance shots.

A 12-3 Coyotes run near the end of the first half put coach Renee Jimenez's team down 27-26 at the break with Dunlap and Tayllor Gipson combining for eight points.

CSUSB led by as many as seven points on four occasions in the second half -- the final time on a 3-pointer from Mack with 9:51 left and the Coyotes up 53-46.

The game was never more than a two-possession game for most of the final nine minutes and CSUEB pulled ahead 70-67 on a 3-pointer from Brianna Terrance with 52 seconds left.

CSUSB took a timeout and once play resumed, the Coyotes' Adriana Brodie went in for a layup. She missed the shot, but gathered the rebound and succeeded on the putback with 24 seconds left and her team down, 70-69.

The Pioneers got the lead back to two on Stephanie Lopez' second of two free throws with 20 seconds left to set up the late-second heroics.

Terrance had 19 points for the Pioneers (12-12, 9-8), who were swept by the Coyotes in the season series.
