SAN BERNARDINO (December 17, 2014) — Jim Maier, who built a CCAA power in 13 seasons at Cal State Dominguez Hills, has been named head softball coach at Cal State San Bernardino, Director of Athletics Dr.
Kevin Hatcher announced Wednesday afternoon.
"It is an honor and a privilege to be the next head coach at Cal State San Bernardino,'' Maier said. "I am anxious to get back to a college environment and I believe that things are in place to make Coyote softball something special for the university, the community and the young women who play the game. This is an exciting time to return to college coaching and I can't wait to get going.''
Maier spent 2001-13 as head softball coach at CSUDH, where he led his teams to 12 winning seasons, an average of 35 victories a year for a 460-273-2 overall record (a .627 winning percentage). The Toros received seven NCAA Tournament berths in his tenure, won two CCAA championships (2005 and 2012) and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen twice (2012-13). He was the CCAA Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2012.
He coached 62 All-CCAA players, four All-Americans who earned seven total honors and 22 Toros earned All-West Region honors in his 13 seasons.
After stepping down from the CSUDH post following the 2013 season, he returned to St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs, where he became the Dean of Students. He also continued his coaching career and helped the school win the 2014 CIF and state softball championships and was named California's Coach of the Year in his only year at the helm.
"Jim fostered an environment at CSUDH where his teams performed well under pressure and delivered success on and off the field,'' Hatcher said. "His ability to get the most from his teams speaks volumes about his teaching and coaching prowess. Jim has all of the essential attributes CSUSB desires in a head coach and I am happy to have him on board.''
Maier had two tours at St. Paul HS. Prior to taking the CSUDH job in 2000, he compiled a 300-78 record while leading the program to seven conference titles, 14 consecutive CIF playoff berths and a CIF Division I State Championship in 1988. He coached 25 players who earned college scholarships, including nine at the NCAA Division I level. He also coached 17 different All-CIF players including CIF Player of the Year Keri Kropke, who later earned All-American honors at Cal.
A 1987 graduate of Cal State Fullerton, Maier earned his master's degree from Azusa Pacific University in 1995. Maier and Lori, his wife of 20 years, reside in La Habra with their sons Jake (17), Jared (13) and Kyle (11).
Maier replaces
Tacy Duncan, who resigned after nine seasons with the Coyotes to accept an assistant principal position within the Riverside Unified School District.
The Coyotes open the 2014 season Feb. 4 at Cal Baptist.
