Box Score
SAN BERNARDINO – Career victory No. 100 will not soon be forgotten by Coyotes head coach
Renee Jimenez or her team for a long, long time.
Down 19 points with 11:23 remaining, Jimenez's crew put together a run for the ages that culminated with the upset of the CCAA season in a 71-64 come-from-behind win over league co-leader Cal State East Bay on Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.
Sophomore
Alexcia Mack scored a game-high 24 points to lead four players in double figures for CSUSB, now 3-8 overall and 2-7 in the CCAA. Seniors
Tayllor Gipson and
Jazzmyn Davis each scored 13 points and fellow senior
Trinidee Trice 12 off the bench.
Cal State East Bay, now 9-6, 6-2, seemed to be in the driver's seat after grabbing a 56-37 lead on Toni Breshers' layup.
Davis, who scored all of her points in the second half, got the run going with a jumper and after a missed layup by Mack, the Coyotes scored five straight field goals – spread out evenly by Gipson, Brianna Baker, Mack, Trice and Davis, and CSUSB pulled to within seven, 56-49, with 6:51 left.
The deficit remained at seven – 60-53 – on a three-point play from Lopez at 5:19, but Davis came back with a jumper, and a 3-pointer and field goal from Mack tied the game at 60-60 with 3:25 left.
After Brianna Terrance put CSUEB up 62-60, Mack scored a free throw and Davis' jumper gave the Coyotes the lead for good, 63-62 with 2:25 left.
A pair of free throws from CSUEB's Danielle Peacon cut the lead to one (65-64) with 41 seconds remaining. But Mack polished off the Pioneers with six straight free throws in the final 32 seconds and the Coyotes had their upset.
All told, the Coyotes outscored their opponent 34-8 in the final 10:52.
CSUSB played lights out in the final 20 minutes. It shot 60.7 percent (17-28) from the field and perhaps the most impressive stat of the night was the Coyotes' 18-0 advantage on point off turnovers in the final 20 and 30-6 for the game.
The 5-5 junior Baker had an equally impressive stat line with nine points, and team highs in rebounds (nine) and assists (seven).
Lopez led the Pioneers with 22 points. Peacon had 17 and Terrance 11.
CSUSB plays at San Francisco State on Friday.
