Box Score RIVERSIDE -- Erin Asher's desperation shot went in as the buzzer sounded Saturday afternoon to give host Cal Baptist a cliffhanger 65-64 win over Cal State San Bernadino in the 2013-14 season opener for both women's basketball teams.
Seconds earlier,
Jazzmyn Davis of CSUSB stole a ball from the Lancers' Elise Shelton. CBU then fouled the Coyotes'
Tayllor Gipson with five seconds left and she sank both free throws to give the Coyotes a 64-63 lead, setting up Asher's heroics.
The game marked the debut for Coyotes Head Coach
Renee Jimenez and also the start of Cal Baptist's first year of eligibility for post-season play in NCAA Div. II. The Lancers compete in the Pac West Conference and are the defending PWC women's basketball champions. CSUSB represents the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
"Mistakes early in the game really hurt, but I'm really proud of our kids and how hard we fought the entire game,'' Jimenez said. "We are still young and new to one another and the system. If we can learn to play for 40 minutes, we're going to be tough to beat. A loss at the buzzer is always tough to take.  We defended them perfectly and sometimes it just doesn't go your way.''
The Lancers led by five points at halftime, 31-26, but were outscored 38-34 in the final 20 minutes by the Coyotes.
CSUSB shot 30 percent from the field (18 of 60) but were a frigid 1 for 13 from three-point range (7.7 percent). The Coyotes made up for it at the foul line, sinking 27 of 33 attempts (82 percent) including 22 of 27 in the second half.
Each team had 17 turnovers. CSUSB recorded 11 steals, three each by
Briana Baker and
Alexcia Mack.
Gipson was the team's leading scorer with 17 points, making five of 11 field goals including the team's lone three-pointer. She also had seven rebounds. Mack, who scored 20 points in an exhibition game against Loyola Marymount, scored 14 points, making five of 10 shots and contributing two assists. Davis had 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
Adriana Brodie contributed 12 points, eight rebounds and was six-for-six from the foul line.
Shelton led the Lancers with 16 points. Ashley Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmine Sauser had 11 points and seven rebounds. Asher, the hero for CBU, finished with seven points, two assists and two steals.
The Coyotes will open CCAA conference play on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. against UC San Diego in Coussoulis Arena.
