Dunlap gives Coyotes lift off the bench

Freshman scores 13 in 65-50 loss to Azusa Pacific

LA JOLLA – A seasoned veteran and a newcomer were the stories for the Coyotes in their 65-50 loss to Azusa Pacific in Friday's game at the UC San Diego Tournament.

Senior Tayllor Gipson scored 18 points with 10 rebounds for her first career double-double and freshman Tatiana Dunlap gave coach Renee Jimenez some punch off the bench with 13 points in 29 minutes.

CSUSB fell behind 17-4 with 13:51 remaining in the first half as the Cougars shot extremely well in the first half. APU succeeded on 62.5 percent of its field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes on 15-of-24 shooting and led 38-23 at the break.

Both Gipson and Dunlap had five rebounds in the opening half and each had seven points.

Gipson had 11 of her 18 points in the second half and sophomore Karina Hernandez scored all eight of her points in the final half.

The Coyotes finished the game on an upbeat, outscoring the Cougars 13-4 in the final five minutes of play.

Sophomore Alexcia Mack had six points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists in 31 minutes.

The Coyotes (0-4 overall) takes on Metro State on Saturday.

APU (2-2) was led by Kelly Hardeman's game-high 20 points. Teammate Sendy Valles had 18 for the Cougars, who finished the game with a 54-percent success rate from the field.
