SAN BERNARDINO – A back-and-forth contest went visiting UC San Diego's way Sunday afternoon as the Coyotes were defeated 70-65 in
Renee Jimenez's first home game as CSUSB's head coach.
Senior
Tayllor Gipson fired in 19 points and junior
Briana Baker and sophomore
Adriana Brodie each had 11 in a game where the visiting Tritons took control late.
UCSD (1-0, 1-0 CCAA) hit 5-of-6 shots and 7-of-9 free throws in a six and a half minute stretch and pulled away from the Coyotes.
After
Alexcia Mack hit two free throws to tie the game 45-45 with 7:13 to go, the Tritons grabbed the lead for good on a layup from game-high scorer Miranda Seto. She finished with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
This was a game that CSUSB battled back and showed glimpses of strong play. After hitting just three field goals in the first 10 minutes of play, the Coyotes hit their next 8-of-13 shots and finished the half trailing by five, 30-25.
They opened the second half with a strong defense that featured a 13-0 scoring run off turnovers and grabbed a 40-36 lead on Baker's layup with 13:08 left.
But Seto was too much to handle for the Coyotes as UCSD shot 60.9 percent from the floor in the second half for the five-point win.
A free throw from Coyotes sophomore
Jenna Klein cut UCSD's lead to four (64-60) with 58 seconds left. But the Tritons' Megan Perry answered right back with a three-pointer from the left corner that gave them enough cushion for the victory.
UCSD finished with a 53.3 percent clip from the floor (24 of 45). The Coyotes did win the battle on the boards, 36-30, with an impressive 13 on the offensive end.
CSUSB is off until Tuesday, Nov. 26, when it plays at Cal Poly Pomona.
