Coyote advance on shootout in NCAA play

CSUSB outscores Cal Baptist 5-4 after scoreless draw

Kellie Valverde converted the fifth and final shootout goal for CSUSB.
Box Score TURLOCK – Coach Travis Clarke said he would not be surprised if Thursday night's NCAA opening-round game against Cal Baptist would go beyond 110 minutes.

The Coyotes coach didn't plan on being quite so prophetic, but that's exactly what happened and in the end, his team advanced.

CSUSB outscored the Lancers 5-4 in a shootout after playing to a scoreless draw and will face West Region top seed and host Cal State Stanislaus at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"I am very proud of our team,'' Clarke said.  "We played a very good team tonight and both teams had good chances to score.  We are going to enjoy this tonight and then get back to work tomorrow in preparation for Stanislaus"

The Coyotes earned shootout goals from Jasmine Williams, Sierra Van Meter, Paige Kang, Jasmine Bell and their fifth and final one from Kellie Valverde.

In regulation, CSUSB outshot the Lancers 10-7, but mustered just two shots on goal against Lancers GK Rosie Nakata, both in the first OT. Kiana Quarles put a shot on target in the 91st minute and eight minutes later, Susan Ibarra's shot was stopped by Nakata.

CSUSB had five corners, including three in the second half, and CBU fired off four, but could not convert.

The Coyotes take an 11-6-4 record into Saturday's game against the Warriors, who are 18-0-2.
