SAN BERNARDINO -- Senior
Brandon Day took care of matters with one mighty swing of the bat Saturday afternoon.
The Fullerton native ripped a one-out, three-run walkoff home run in the ninth inning to lift the Coyotes to a 10-8 victory over visiting Azusa Pacific and take the weekend series.
One night after losing 2-1 at APU, the Coyotes had 15 hits, but none was bigger than Day's shot in the night.
Trailing 8-7,
Curtis Cassise led off the ninth with a single to right. After
Edwin Mendoza flew out to first,
Paul Eshleman singled up the middle and the Coyotes had runners at first and second with Day up.
The Coyotes trailed 5-0 entering the home half of the third. They got the lead on a four-run, four-hit third as eight Coyotes hit. Cassise's two-run double and Mendoza followed with a two-run single.
After APU got a run in the fourth, the Coyotes answered with two of their own in the four and another in the fifth.
Darren Dworak has a RBI single and
Mike Newell had a sacrifice fly that scored
Anthony Smith and the Coyotes led 6-5.
The Coyotes' solo run in the fifth came courtesy of
Matt Winn, who singled in Mendoza, who singled.
APU struck with two runs in the sixth to take the lead until the pivotal ninth.
Ethan Chapman, Cassise, Mendoza, Eshleman, Day, Winn and Dworak all had two hits.
Tony Guerra earned the victory in relief. He threw the ninth and had a strikeout.
The Coyotes are off until Thursday when they play at Biola.
