Otters sweep Coyotes in series opener

Butler, Leffingwell each has two hits in the opener

Jamie Leffingwell went 2-for-3 with a double in the Coyotes' 5-2 loss to CSU Monterey Bay.
SEASIDE -- Juniors Britney Butler and Jamie Leffingwell each had two hits  and senior Alex Mitchell added an RBI, but it wasn't enough as the Coyotes were defeated 5-2 by Cal State Monterey Bay in the first game of Friday's doubleheader.

CSUSB allowed 13 runs in the first inning and lost 14-0 in the second game that was called after five innings.

The Coyotes dropped to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the CCAA, while the Otters improved to 13-3, 5-1.

In the opener, the Coyotes scored a run in each of the first two innings and led 2-1 entering the fourth inning.

Butler gave CSUSB a 1-0 lead with a double to right center that scored Charlotte Galzote, who reached on a single down the right-field line.

In the second, Mitchell's two-out single up the middle scored Leffingwell, who led off the inning with a double.

But the Otters placed a four-run, two-hit fourth inning and that was enough to earn the win.

Senior RHP Courtney Wilhelms is now 3-4. She threw 3 1/3 innings and struck out two, walked four and scattered six hits.

In the second game, Leffingwell, Mitchell, Galzote and Jamie Nakagawa each had hits for the Coyotes.

The teams continue their series at 11 a.m. Saturday.
