SAN RAFAEL --
Julio Ayala may have given his Cal State San Bernardino men's soccer team the lift it has needed five games into the 2011 season.
Ayala fired in a shot from the left box just 24 seconds into the second overtime as the visiting Coyotes earned a 2-1 win in 2OT against Dominican University in nonconference play Wednesday afternoon.
CSUSB improved to 2-3-0 overall as it now prepares for this weekend's CCAA games that begin Friday at Cal State L.A.
Despite outshooting the host Penguins 11-2 in the first half, the teams played to a scoreless first half. GK Casey Gibson kept the Coyotes scoreless with three saves.
In the 47th minute, DU grabbed the lead on Sam Vella's tally.
Nearly 30 minutes later, the Coyotes finally struck with a game-tying goal, thanks to sophomore
Lee Nishanian. After freshman
Dylan Faggioni's throw-in, Nishanian placed a header that got past Gibson and the Coyotes finally struck.
CSUSB had the first overtime's only shot from
Juan Galarza, but neither team could draw the game-winner.
That changed quickly after Ayala scored his second goal of the season.
Coyotes All-American GK
Tanner Olinger earned the win. He had just one save.
