SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's soccer team saw its 2025 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, falling to Point Loma Nazarene University in penalty kicks in the Second Round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship at PLNU Soccer Field.
Because the contest was decided in penalty kicks, the game officially goes into the record books as a 2-2 tie. With the result, Cal State San Bernardino's season comes to a close with an overall record of 9-3-8.
Point Loma broke the ice in just the eighth minute on a goal from Cole Friesen to go ahead 1-0.
The advantage lasted only 15 minutes, as the Yotes equalized in the 23rd minute. Redshirt freshman center back Damian Gonzalez (Whitter, Calif.) played a long ball over the top that found senior captain Tony Negrete (Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.). Negrete made a nice move around the on-charging Sea Lion keeper and slid a shot into the bottom of the net to level the game at 1-1.
The game remained knotted at one until the 66th minute, when Point Loma took the lead on a penalty kick.
It appeared the Coyotes season may be coming to an end in regulation, but senior Anthony Morales (Orange, Calif.) had other plans. With 1:01 showing on the clock, Morales buried a left-footed effort from just outside the box to equalize the match and force extra time.
Neither team found the back of the net in the two golden goal sessions, and the game went to PKs.
Only Morales and redshirt junior Anthony Luna (Santa Clarita, Calif.) were able to convert from the spot for the Coyotes, and Point Loma scored three times to book their ticket to the third round.
In goal, CSUSB redshirt junior Donovan Palomares (Boyle Heights, Calif.) was immense for CSUSB, making a season-high eight saves in the defeat. He finished the 2025 season with only one defeat on his ledger at 6-1-8.
