SAN BERNARDINO -- Senior
Casey Hirsch opened the 2011 season in style with a goal and an assist as the host Coyotes earned a 2-0 shuout victory over Dixie State on a sun-splashed Thursday afternoon at Coyote Premier Field.
Hirsch, who earned honorable mention All-CCAA honors a year ago broke free on the right side on a feed from Jani Carmona and
Carissa Kutkowski in the game's 47th minute. She got a free look and punched the ball past the Red Storm's April Beck's right side for a 1-0 lead.
More than 30 minutes later, the Coyotes added an insurance goal from
Brittany Wilding, who received a pass from Hirsch. She was in the right place and nudged the ball just inside the right post.
Goalkeeper
Tiffany Mallick earned the shutout with six saves.
CSUSB outshot the Red Storm 15-8 as
Kristina Gomez led with four shots and three SOG. Hirsch had two shots -- both SOGs.
CSUSB will take on Academy of Art on Labor Day. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
GAME NOTES: The Coyotes played in their 24th season opener and improved to an all-time mark of 12-10-2 in first games... The Coyotes now own the all-time series lead against DSC, with a 2-1 lead... The shutout was Mallick's third in her career. She now owns an all-time record of 10-8-1 in her second year starting in front of the nets.
