SAN BERNARDINO --
Nick Heusterberg's pinch-hit two-run home run in the seventh helped Cal State San Bernardino to an 8-3 victory and earn a split in its series against Cal State San Marcos in nonconference baseball Saturday at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes, who lost the opener 6-5, are 6-8 overall and return to CCAA play this weekend with a four-game series at Cal State East Bay.
Game 1: CSUSM 6, Coyotes 5
The visiting Cougars grabbed a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning off Coyotes RHP
Casey McCarthy and were helped by a two-run homer by Trent Jemmett.
Matt Winn gave the Coyotes their first run of the game in the fifth. He connected on a triple to right field that scored
Mike Newell, who reached on a walk.
The Cougars added to their lead in the sixth with two runs on three hits and had a run in the seventh to lead 6-1.
CSUSB cut the deficit to 6-4 in the seventh with three runs on four hits.
Matt Haney led off with a home run to left and four batters later,
Brandon Day ripped a two-run double to left center that scored
David Silvas and Winn, who reached base on a single and double, respectively.
The Coyotes added another run in the eighth on Silvas' single to center that scored
Ethan Chapman, who singled.
Winn finished 3-for-5 and a home run shy of the cycle. Silvas, Day and Haney each had two hits.
Game 2: Coyotes 8, CSUSM 3
Virgil Chavira went 3-for-4 with three RBI and
Erik Ornelas was 3-for-4 as the Coyotes had 11 hits that included four extra-base hits.
CSUSB grabbed a 3-0 lead through three innings.
Ryan Hulbert had an infield ground-out that scored Day, who singled in the second. The Coyotes added two in the third as Silvas had a run-scoring double and Chavira an RBI-single.
The Cougars had two runs in the fourth and tied it in the fifth before CSUSB got rolling.
Chavira's two-run double gave CSUSB the lead for good at 5-3 and Silvas had a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Heusterberg came in to pinch-hit for Hulbert and hit a shot to straightaway center, approximately 395 feet for a two-run homer.
