Mitchell gives Coyotes doubleheader sweep over CSUDH

Junior delivers walk-off, two-run homer in the 8th to secure sweep

Alex Mitchell connected on a two-out, two-run walk-off homer against CSU Dominguez Hills.
SAN BERNARDINO -- Junior Alex Mitchell hit a two-out, two-run walk-off home run in the eighth inning to lift the Coyotes over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 6-4 in a nonconference doubleheader sweep at Coyote Park on Tuesday.

The victories were the Coyotes' fourth and fifth against the Toros this season as last month they took three of four in CCAA play.  CSUSB improved to 16-12 overall, while the Toros are now 17-11.

The two teams will complete play Wednesday with a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.

Game 1: Coyotes 4, CSU Dominguez Hills 3

The Coyotes trailed 3-2 entering the sixth inning before they came up with the decisive runs.

After Alyssa Flores struck out to lead off the inning, Courtney Wilhelms reached on a walk and stole second. Jamie Roland walked and that brought up Mitchell.

She earned a base-hit bunt that got past the third baseman and Wilhelms raced from second to tie the game at 3-3.

Britney Butler followed with a single that scored Roland for the go-ahead run, but Mitchell was thrown out at the plate.

The Toros had two on base with no outs in the seventh, but the Coyotes' Cassidy Lee got out of the jam with a double play and a line out to short to end the game.

Mitchell had two hits, while Flores and Jacquelyn Holtzclaw each homered for the Coyotes.

Cassidy Lee earned the win in 2 2/3 innings of relief. She had two strikeouts and allowed just two hits.

Game 2: Coyotes 6, Toros 4 (8 innings)

CSUSB raced to a 3-0 lead through three innings, only to have the Toros score twice in both the fourth and fifth innings to lead, 4-3.

In CSUSB's fifth, back-to-back singles by Mitchell and Jamie Leffingwell put runners at second at third for Priscilla Curiel, who lifted a sacrifice fly to center that scored Mitchell and the score would remain tied at 4-4 through the seventh.

The Coyotes threatened big-time in the seventh. Mitchell led off the inning with a double, bringing up Leffingwell, who drove a Stephanie Jimenez pitch over the left-field fence, but Toros' OF Daisy Beltran reached over the wall and made the catch.

Mitchell advanced to third. The Toros loaded the bases with intentional walks to both Flores and Curiel and the strategy paid off.

Jimenez forced Felicia Cervantes and Wilhelms to pop out in the infield and end the inning with bases loaded and just one out.

In the eighth, Roland hit a one-out single. After Butler flew out to left, Roland stole second and that brought up Mitchell.

The junior ripped a shot over the head of the right fielder and the ball sailed over the wall for a walk-off victory.

Brianne Godfredson earned the win in relief. She improved to 2-3 on the season in three innings of work. She allowed two hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Mitchell was 4-for-5 with two extra-base hits. Wilhelms, who homered in the second, and Roland had two hits apiece.
