Coyotes turn it around with Saturday softball sweep over Chico State

CSUSB remains home with eight games in five days

Sophomore Britney Butler had three homers on the day in the Coyotes' sweep over Chico State.
SAN BERNARDINO -- Jamie Leffingwell's run-scoring single in the 9th inning lifted Cal State San Bernardino over Chico State 6-5 and the Coyotes went on to win 13-5 in the second game that was called due to the 8-run rule in California Collegiate Athletic Association play Saturday at Coyote Field.

The Coyotes, now 14-12 overall and 10-10 in the CCAA, will take on Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game nonconference series that begins Tuesday at Coyote Park. The teams will play Wednesday and CSUSB will conclude its 12-game homestand with a four-game CCAA series against Cal State Stanislaus that begins Friday.

Game 1: Coyotes 6, Chico State 5 (9 innings)

The Coyotes jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings and led 5-4 through three innings.

CSUSB earned two runs on three hits in the first. Felicia Cervantes' run-scoring single drove in Jacquelyn Holtzclaw, who singled. Alyssa Flores then followed with an RBI-double to right center that scored Cervantes.

In the third, Britney Butler connected on her first home run of the season with a two shot to left that scored Jamie Roland, who reached on a fielder's choice.

A four-run, five-hit inning by the Wildcats in the third tied the game in the third, but CSUSB went back on top 5-4 on Priscilla Curiel's lead-off homer.

Both teams were shutout over the next three innings until the top of the 7th when Jessie Minch singled through the left side and scored Rachel Fallia, who reached on a fielder's choice.

In the ninth, Flores got on base with a two-out walk. Alene Casillas pinch-ran and Courtney Wilhelms followed with a single that placed two on with Leffingwell at the plate.

She punched a single to center that scored Casillas and the Coyotes  won for just the second time in their last 11 games.

Cassidy Lee threw four innings of relief and improvedto 5-5. She gave up three hits and one run.

Butler, Holtzclaw, Flores and Leffingwell all had two hits.

Game 2: Coyotes 13, Wildcats 5 (5 innings)

Butler led off the game with a home run and things fell into place as the Coyotes earned the sweep in a game that was shortened due to the eight-run rule.

Butler had two home runs in the game as CSUSB homered three times in the second inning for a six-run, six-hit inning. Adding homers in the inning were Wilhelms and Leffingwell.

The Coyotes had 16 hits -- three from Butler, Holtzclaw, Flores and Leffingwell, who went 3-for-3 with four RBI. Alex Mitchell had a triple.

Carly Land, now 5-3, won the game in relief of Lee. She threw three hitless innings and gave up only a walk.
