SAN BERNARDINO --
Britney Butler and
Jamie Roland totaled three hits each on the day for Cal State San Bernardino, but the Coyotes were handed a pair of defeats by Chico State, 8-2 and 6-5, on Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association softball doubleheader at Coyote Park.
The Coyotes are now 12-12 overall and 8-10 in the CCAA, while the Wildcats improved to 14-5, 11-3.
The two teams will complete their four-game series with a doubleheader slated for 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
Game 1: Chico State 8, Coyotes 2
Junior Sam Baker scattered three hits and struck out six as the Wildcats combined for 10 hits in the opener.
Trailing 4-0 through two and a half innings, the Coyotes scored one run in the third.
Jacquelyn Holtzclaw scored on an unearned run when Butler reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop.
The Wildcats added four more runs in the fifth to lead 8-1 before the Coyotes added another single run -- this time in the fifth.
Senior
Priscilla Curiel hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Holtzclaw.
The Coyotes stranded nine runners on base.
Holtzclaw, Roland and
Felicia Cervantes had hits for the Coyotes. Roland had the only extra-base hit -- a double in the sixth.
Hailey Stockman had a solo home run for the Wildcats. Britt Wright, Stockman and Sam Quadt each had two hits for the Wildcats. Quadt had three RBI.
Game 2: Chico State 6, Coyotes 5
A four-run fifth inning aided the Wildcats as CSUSB grabbed a 4-2 lead thorugh four innings.
The Coyotes grabbed a 2-0 lead through one inning on one hit. Curiel laced a sacrifice fly to right that scored Butler, who led off with a walk. Four batters later,
Courtney Wilhelms singled to left and scored Cervantes, who reached base on an infield error from third.
CSUSB added another run in the second after Chico State got on the board with a run in its half of the second.
Curiel had a two-out single that scored Butler, who reached on a fielder's choice.
CSUSB grabbed its 4-2 lead through four innings on Butler's RBI-double that scored Roland, who led off the inning with a single.
But the Wildcats put together three straight doubles to lead off the fifth as they finished the inning with four runs on five hits.
CSUSB cut the margin to 6-5 in the sixth. Cervantes' one-out single up the middle scored Butler, who singled to second to lead off the inning.
Butler was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Roland was 2-for-4. Curiel had two RBI for the game.
