SAN BERNARDINO — Cal State San Bernardino swept San Francisco State in Saturday's doubleheader, winning the nightcap with an extra-inning walk-off homer by
Erik Ornelas after coasting to a 14-3 win in the early contest.
Down 3-0 going into the fourth in game one, SFSU tied it up on two CSUSB miscues. With two outs and runners at second and third, Nick Nyman hit a ground ball to
James Kono who overthrew first base which allowed two runs to score and put Nyman on second. Nyman then cam home for the third run when he attempted to steal third and catcher
Cody Madison threw the ball into left field.
But it was all Coyotes from there. In the fifth inning, CSUSB batted around the order and scored six to take a 10-3 lead.
Leland Sisco plated a pair on a double to left-center,
Julio Torres hit a solo shot and Kono bounced a three-run blast off the scoreboard in right field.
Kono, who spent some time at San Francisco State, took the opportunity to show them what they were missing since he left. He doubled home Madison in the sixth and hit a second three-run homer in the eight. Kono ended up going 4-for-5 with seven RBIs on two home runs and two doubles. Kono had just eight RBIs coming into today's game.
In total, CSUSB had fourteen runs on fifteen hits.
CSUSB pitcher
Brandon Cunniff (6-2) picked up the win with no earned runs and three strikeouts in eight innings of work. Ryan De Jesus (2-3) took the loss for SFSU.
In the second game, the Gators had a 2-0 lead and pitcher Patrick Haugen had given up only one hit going into the sixth inning when the Coyote bats finally woke up.
Darren Dworak led off the inning with a pinch-hit walk and
Luke Mullinax came in to pinch run.
Ethan Chapman doubled and the Coyotes had runners at second and third with no outs. Mullinax capitalized on a wild pitch to score the first Coyotes run and Ornelas singled home Chapman to tie the ballgame at 2-2.
In the bottom half of the eighth, Ornelas took the first at bat for CSUSB and hit a shot over the left-field wall to end the game in dramatic fashion. Haugen (7-3) suffered the loss, while
Lucas Sanford (4-0) picked up the win in relief. Coyotes starting pitcher
Daniel Stenavich gave up two runs on seven hits and had two strikeouts in seven innings of work, but did not factor in the decision.
The Coyotes improve to 24-13 overall and 23-12 in the CCAA while the Gators drop to 19-26 overall and 12-19 in the CCAA.
These two teams meet for the final game of the series Sunday at noon at Fiscalini Field. With a win the Coyotes can seal up a spot in the CCAA Tournament.
