SAN BERNARDINO — Cal State San Bernardino nearly pulled off a series sweep Saturday with Cal Poly Pomona in an 11-7 win and a 9-7 loss at Fiscalini Field. CSUSB was chasing the Broncos all day and rallied after being down six early in the opener and was down six in the nightcap before closing it to two, but CPP closed the door to end the day.

The Coyotes (21-13, 20-12 CCAA) hit six home runs, three in each game with Julio Torres and Ryan Hulbert, who hit two, going yard in the first game before Ethan Chapman, Cody Madison and Leland Sisco all circled the bases in the second game.

Hulbert went 2-for-3 with five RBIs and three runs scored in the opener. Chapman had a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored and an RBI while Madison went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Lucas Sanford (3-0) recorded the win in the opener after throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief for starter Trevor Longfellow who allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Daniel Stenavich (3-4) took the loss in the second game after giving up five earned runs on nine hits in five innings of work.

In the opener CSUSB took a 1-0 lead on a double steal in the first, but Cal Poly Pomona answered with two in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.

The Coyotes began to chip away in the bottom of the fifth on Hulbert's first home run of the game and then cut it to 7-5 on Hulbert's next at with a three-run shot to center field. The Coyotes tied the game in the seventh with two runs and then put it away with a four-run eighth that included four walks given up by the Broncos's pitching staff.

CPP got out quickly again in the nightcap, taking a 9-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. After the Broncos recorded the first out of the inning, Sisco and Chapman hit back-to-back solo home runs to get CSUSB within four at 9-5. Erik Ornelas then doubled to left field before Madison went yard to cut the deficit to two at 9-7.

That was the last of the offense for CSUSB as Cal Poly Pomona retired the next five batters to escape the series with one win.

The Coyotes have just two CCAA series left with both of them being played at home the next two weeks.
