Coyotes go cold in final 12 minutes

Ooten had team highs with 14 points and six rebounds.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- A chance to move up into fifth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association by Cal State San Bernardino was thwarted by Chico State in a 61-51 loss by CSUSB.

The Coytoes (12-9, 8-8 CCAA) scored just 12 points in the final 12 minutes of the game after leading 39-37 with 12:24 left to play. Cal State San Bernardino entered the game just a half game behind the Warriors (12-8, 9-6 CCAA) with a chance to move a half game ahead, but now falls a game and half back. Chico State opened the flood gates late in the second half with a 20-3 run to take a 57-42 lead, the biggest of the game, with 5:28 left to play and never looked back. Synchro Bull scored seven points in that run and finished with a game-high 20 points. Bull was 9-for-14 from the floor and hit the only 3-pointer and free throw she attempted.

Bull didn't miss a field goal in the first half, hitting all six attempts and one free throw for 13 points. Chico State jumped out to a 13-6 lead to start the game, but a 9-2 run capped by a Shannon Gholar steal and a Morgan Pryor lay in tied it at 15 with 10:36 in the half. The Wildcats answered, scoring 10 straight to lead 25-15, but three straight 3-pointers, one by Amanda Ragains, Morgan Pryor and Ashlee Ford, in a 9-2 run brought the Coytoes within three, at 27-24, with 2:29 left in the half. Chico State carried a 30-27 lead into the half.

The Wildcats did not hit a shot from downtown in the first half, but buried four treys in the final 12 minutes. Chico State was 0-3 in the first half and 4-for-8 in the second half from 3-point range. It was almost reversed roles for the Coyotes as they sank five treys in the first half and were just 1-for-7 in the second half.

Kymberly Ooten led CSUSB with 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Ragains and Pryor each scored eight. Ford posted five steals to go with her five points and three assists. CSUSB struggled from the field, hitting just 21-for-63 and were 6-of-20 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats on the other hand shot 44.6 percent (25-66) from the field. Chico State did the majority if its damage in the paint, out scoring the Coyotes 28-10 inside the key. The Wildcats also out rebounded CSUSB 42-32.

CSUSB now hits the road for two weeks with games at Sonoma State, Humboldt State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.
