LOS ANGELES — Whoever kept the scorebook for Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State L.A.'s baseball doubleheader Sunday went through a lot of led as the Coyotes scored 29 total runs in a 22-8, 7-2 doubleheader sweep over the Golden Eagles.
The Coyotes (11-2, 11-1 CCAA) are now off to their best start since the school moved up to NCAA Division II. After losing their first game of the year to this same Cal State L.A. team, CSUSB has won 11 of its last 12 games and has won five straight.
CSUSB hit .434 on the day, going 33-for-76.
Erik Ornelas led the way going 6-for-10 with seven RBIs.
In the opener, the Coyotes scored 20 runs in the first five innings. The Coyotes led 1-0 after the first, 8-0 after the second and 16-0 after the third. CSUSB tacked on two more in the top of the fourth to lead 18-0 before the Golden Eagles scored their first run of the game. That was answered by two more Coyote runs to take a 20-1 lead. The Coyotes scored their final two runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run shot to right center by
Ryan Hulbert.
CSULA scored three runs each in the eighth and ninth, but it was too little too late as the Coyotes rolled in the opener.
Trevor Longfellow (2-0) picked up the win, allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out 10 in eight innings of work.
Cody Madison went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Ornelas went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored while Matthew Winn had a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Chris LeFay also went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, it was a fourth-inning barrage of runs that fueled the Coyotes to a win.
Despite scoring first to lead 1-0 in the top of the first, CSUSB gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to trail 2-1. Then in the fifth, the Coyotes loaded the bases to start the inning before an Ornelas single scored two to put CSUSB up 3-2. Madison made it 4-2 with a double to right center before three straight walks gave the Coyotes a 6-2 lead.
Ornelas drove home the final run of the game with a single to left to score Chapman.
Ornelas went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Daniel Stenavich (1-1) picked up the win after throwing the first six innings in which he allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out five.
The Coyotes hit the road this week as they travel to Cal State Stanislaus for a four-game series, Friday through Sunday.
