SAN BERNARDINO — After the formulas were used and the dust settled in a 72-60 loss to Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino will live to see another day.
The Coyotes (13-14, 9-13 CCAA) needed just one more win to solidify a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, but instead helped to cause a log jam for seventh place in the conference. CSUSB luckily won the first tie breaker to secure seventh place and a date with Cal Poly Pomona, Tuesday at 5:30 at Pomona.
Krystal Urzua scored a game-high 27 points, the most she has had in CCAA play this year and she was just two short of tying a season-high.
The senior, one of six who were honored before the night began, was 11-of-24 from the field, 2-for-4 from 3-point range, and pulled down four rebounds. Morgan Pryor, another senior, was the only other Coyote in double figures with 11. Pryor and Kymberly Ooten each brought down a team-high six boards.
The Otters (18-8, 14-8 CCAA) shot a blistering 71.8 percent (28-39) from the field, 6-for-12 from beyond the arc. Five different CSUMB players scored in double figures. The odd stat for the Otters was the 62.5 percent shooting from the line.
CSUMB dominated in the paint, scoring 36 points compared to just 20 from CSUSB, but the Coyotes outscored the Otters 22-7 in points off turnovers, 14-4 on second chance points and the Cal State San Bernardino bench scored 19 compared to just 13 from the Monterey Bay bench.
The Otters missed just four shots in the first half (17-21), shooting 81 percent from the field. The only lead the Coyotes had was 2-0 in the first half and it was all CSUMB from that point on.
