SEASIDE — Baseball games don't usually start with a 4-4 tie and only last two innings. After Cal State San Bernardino had the second game of it's doubleheader Saturday with Cal State Monterey Bay postponed in the eighth inning because of fog, the Coyotes closed out Sunday with a pair of wins (6-5, 17-10) over the Otters.
CSUSB starts California Collegiate Athletic Association play at 4-0 and improves to 4-1 on the year.
The Coyotes picked up on Sunday morning where they left off on Saturday afternoon. Tied at 4-4 in the eighth, neither team scored a run in the inning, but both scored in the ninth.
Ethan Chapman reached first with a lead off walk before
Erik Ornelas pushed him over to second with a sacrifice bunt. The sacrifice wasn't needed as Matthew Winn blasted a two-run homer to left to put the Coyotes up 6-4.
CSUSB turned the game over to
Andrew Schile who walked the first batter, but induced back-to-back groundouts leaving just a runner at first. The Otters ripped two straight singles up the middle to score one run, but Schile struck out Justin Aguilera for the final out, leaving two stranded on the bases. It was the second straight save for Schile.
Lucas Sanford (1-0) picked up his first win of the year after he entered the game in the bottom of the seventh. The junior tossed 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and walked just one before handing the ball over to Schile for the final inning.
Bryant Veiga went 3-for-4 in the game with a trio of RBIs. Chapman was 1-for-3 in the game with an RBI and three runs scored.
The final game of the series resembled more of a Saturday afternoon football score versus a baseball game. The Coyotes pounded out 20 hits as CSUSB went 20-for-46 to hit .435 on the day. Eight different Coyotes recorded hits and all eight posted at least two hits.
The first four in the lineup for the Coyotes went a combined 12-for-21 with 12 RBIs and eight runs scored. Chapman went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and four runs scored while Ornelas drove in five runs and scored one, going 3-for-6. Winn was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored and Veiga went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
Carlos Nakamura (1-0) recorded his first win of the season, tossing the final four innings. He allowed just one run on four hits and struck out four.
The Otters struck first in the bottom of the first, scoring two. The Coyotes answered in the second with one and took the lead with four in the top of the third to start the snowball affect of scoring. Monterey Bay added two get within one at 5-4, but CSUSB added four more runs in the fifth to lead 9-4.
CSUMB then unloaded in the bottom half of the inning with five runs to knot it at 9-9. After a scoreless sixth, the Coyotes put the game away with a five-run seventh and a three-run eighth and held the Otters to just one run in the final four innings.
The Coyotes now get set to open the home season Friday in the first game of a four-game series against Sonoma State.
