Box Score: No. 8 Coyotes def. Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 OT
SAN BERNARDINO -- All
Obi Agwu needed was a clean look at the goal in No. 8-ranked Cal State San Bernardino's game against visiting Cal Poly Pomona on Friday.
All game long, the Broncos were masterful in stopping the CCAA's leading scorer. He had just one shot in regulation and numerous attempts to set up on the offensive end were thwarted by Bronco defenders.
But the always-dangerous Agwu found the opening he needed and he made Cal Poly Pomona pay dearly.
At the game's 93rd minute, Agwu found himself on the receiving end of a pass from teammate
Juan Galarza about 30 yards out and right of the Broncos' net. Agwu squared up his shoulders and fired a shot that found the back of the net to the deep left of GK Andrew Todd and the Coyotes celebrated with a dog pile at midfield in their 1-0 win before a crowd of 278 at Coyote Premier Field.
"Goal scorers need a window and Obi took advantage with his only clear shot of the game,'' Coyotes coach Noah Kooiman said. "This was a playoff-type feel and both teams played very well today. Obi made the most out of his chance and we're on the winning side today. We'll enjoy this one and know that Sunday's going to be even tougher at their place.''
The Coyotes improved to 9-3-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the CCAA in a playoff-type atmosphere that featured two teams with postseason aspirations. CPP dropped to 7-5-1, 5-5-1.
With both teams ranked in this week's NCAA West Region poll, the third-ranked Coyotes and fourth-ranked Broncos played a physical contest that featured 27 combined fouls.
CSUSB was held to just two shots in the first half and one SOG, but its foe had just four shots and one SOG in a game that needed overtime.
Junior Luis Gonzalez had five shots -- all on goal -- and senior Tyler Reinhart had five shots with two SOG for the Broncos. But Coyotes GK
Tanner Olinger played big with nine saves in earning the shutout.
The teams will play Sunday at Cal Poly Pomona with a 5:30 p.m. start. The time was changed due to the annual Pumpkin Festival that brings thousands to the CPP campus.
