SAN BERNARDINO -- A well-rounded effort Friday night led by All-Americans
Jane Chafeh (Fontana) and
Samantha Middleborn (Rialto) paved the way as No. 4-ranked Cal State San Bernardino shut down visiting Chico State 3-0 before a crowd of 437 in attendance at Coussoulis Arena.
The victory for CSUSB, now 11-1 overall and 8-0 and on top of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, was a big one as they tied the school record for consecutive 3-0 wins. They share the record with the 2004 squad that also won nine straight by the shutout margin.
What makes this run a feat of distinction is CSUSB has opened CCAA play with eight straight decisive victories -- a first in the illustrious run of Coyotes volleyball.
The Coyotes will look to establish the record of 10 tomorrow night against Cal State Stanislaus. First serve is 7 p.m.
The Coyotes took control early and led throughout in their 25-19, 25-11, 25-15 victory. Chafeh led CSUSB with nine kills, while Middleborn was 8-1-13 (.538) with four service aces and five block assists.
In Set One, CSUSB got out of the blocks in fine display as it finished the set with a .406 attack percentage. Chafeh and Middleborn each had four kills in the set.
Leading 2-1 in Set Two, the Coyotes took command with Middleborn serving. The junior fired off of four service aces for the night in the stretch and culminated in a 9-0 run. The Wildcats (8-6, 3-5) also had 11 attack errors in the set.
A 16-3 run that featured seven Wildcats' errors put the Coyotes out front early at 17-5 and CSUSB was never threatened.
Setter Camillle Smith (Norco) had 24 assists on the night with four kills, five digs and five block assists. Junior
Megan Johnson (Glendale, Ariz.) and junior
Morgan Carty (Upland) each had six kills.
Junior Kelcie Tolan (Alta Loma) led the Coyotes with eight digs and right behind was sophomore
Jessica Girgle (Rancho Cucamonga) with seven.
MATCH NOTES: The Coyotes are 11-0 on the year when they have more kills than their opponent.... The victory was CSUSB's 35th straight at home and 26th consecutive CCAA home match...
